Abstract
(complete paper available upon request)

Management Consulting is an umbrella bucket from which a wide range of specific topics and services coexist. Regardless of the area of expertise, management consultants are working with clients to identify, plan for and execute change. Consulting facilitates learning and change - - and whether you are working in the front or back of the house, this process requires client leadership. It is for this reason, I propose management consultants should think of themselves as leadership coaches.

This requires a more inclusive attitude on behalf of consultants - - that he or she views their work as one part of an overall system, recognizes success is dependent on interdependency, strives to ensure alignment as well as improvement, and is determined to transfer knowledge to the client organization.
We will explore this important topic, the art and science of strategic leadership coaching, and how enhancing our skill as leadership coaches will grow our effectiveness as management consultants. Self-awareness, alignment and the power of language are some of the key topics our discussion will bump into. Do I know myself, and how does that knowledge make itself known in my role as a consultant? Do I understand how this client organization works, functionally and culturally? How does my choice of language engage or alienate client members?

Whatever your area of expertise, approaching clients as a leadership coach will strengthen and guide shared goals and collaboration, enriching the client-consultant relationship and optimizing desired outcomes.
